Fort de la Croix de Bretagne

The Croix-de-Bretagne fort, built from 1876 to 1879, is a Séré de Rivières-type fort, rising to a height of 2045m. Its purpose was to protect Briançon from foreign incursions via the Montgenèvre pass and the Cerveyrette valley.

Description

In 1881, the Croix de Bretagne fort housed 496 men and 4 horses. The fort was armed with 12 cannons and 4 mortars. It comprised several buildings and casemates to house the troops, as well as the food and ammunition required for 6 months' autonomy.
The fort was modernized in the early 20th century, notably to connect it to the telegraph network and improve the firing platforms.
Used during the First World War, it is now abandoned and in its original state.

The Fort de la Croix de Bretagne can only be reached on foot, either via the hiking trails or the old military road from Villard-Saint-Pancrace.
