Les Arcades - The home of Émilie Carles

Called Les Arcades, this imposing building is the birthplace of Emilie CARLES, famous for her book "Une Soupe aux herbes sauvages" and her fight to preserve the Clarée valley.

Description

The house was built by François PRAT, a local who left to make his fortune in the Genoa trading business.

To show off his fortune, he built the largest house in the village, combining traditional architecture with Italian features (loggia with Tuscan piers).
Bought for a pittance by Emilie CARLES' grandfather, the ALLAIS family live here peacefully, to the rhythm of the family farm.

Once she had obtained her teaching qualification, and following medical problems in Paris, she took up a post in the Hautes-Alpes.

She settled in this house with her husband Jean and opened the first Val-des-Prés boarding house in 1936.

At that time, the house took the name "Les Arcades", after the arcades on the upstairs loggia.
Today, Les Arcades houses the canteen and day-care center for the Val-des-Prés and Les Alberts school groups.
