Between Briançonnais and Queyras stands the Pic de Rochebrune, an imposing stone sentinel that dominates all the surrounding valleys. On this challenging hike on the edge of the Briançonnais, we invite you to admire all its facets.

Description

Along little-traveled paths, we'll visit the high valleys of Briançonnaise, Piedmont and Queyrass, which are home to a lively peasant life that continues to be lulled by the unchanging rhythm of the seasons. Here, no ski lifts spoil the breathtaking beauty of the scenery!
Our hosts will warmly welcome you in old buildings with well-preserved traditional architecture, in the intimacy of small hamlets with an end-of-the-world atmosphere.

DAY 2: Piedmont walk
A warm-up hike to the Capanna Mautino refuge in the Italian Piedmont region, via Lac Gignoux (2329m) and Col Gimont (2394m). Thanks to its low altitude, the latter was once one of the links between the Escarton d'Oulx and the Escarton de Briançon, and a popular crossing point for smugglers of all kinds. Overnight at the Capanna Mautino hut (2110m).

Walking time: 5h - Difference in altitude: + 780 m / - 290 m
DAY 3: Crêtes de Dormillouse
We continue our journey into Italian territory. After skirting the Lac de Fontaine froide (2167m) and crossing the Cols Bousson (2154m) and Chabaud (2213m), we climb the Crêtes de Dormillouse (marmot ridge) to Mont Viradantour (2914 m). Wild atmosphere guaranteed! From here, we'll have a breathtaking view of the string of peaks rising to over 3,000 metres above the Piedmont valleys. Over vast alpine pastures we'll make our way to the hamlet of Les Fonts de Cervières (2040m), a haven of peace in the heart of the alp, where we'll stop for two nights. Night at the Fonts refuge (2040m).

Walking time: 5h30 - Difference in altitude: 930 m / - 910 m
DAY 4: Pic de Malrif
From the hamlet of Les Fonts, we follow the GR 58 up to the Pic de Malrif (2906m) for a panoramic view of the southern slopes of the Ecrins massif on the one hand, and the Queyras and Mont Viso on the other. Overnight at the Fonts refuge (2040 m).

Walking time: 5h - Ascent: + / - 870 m
DAY 5: Lac des Cordes and Col de Péas
Before rejoining the famous GR 58 in the direction of the Queyras Regional Park, we take a long detour to admire the Lac des Cordes (2446m), one of the most beautiful treasures of the Fonts valley. The trail takes us along the banks of the Cerveyrette, dotted with numerous alpine hamlets. We'll be able to see some beautiful chalets with typical architecture, and discover a still well-preserved practice of traditional agriculture. Through communal mountain pastures, we cross the Col des Marsailles (2601m) at the foot of the Pic de Rochebrune, then the Col de Péas (2629m), the gateway to the Queyras massif. Finally, the GR takes us to the charming village of Souliers, where we spend the night. Overnight at the Rochebrune gîte (1880 m).

Walking time: 6h - Difference in altitude: + 1100 m / - 1250 m
DAY 6: Col d'Izoard
After admiring Lac Souliers (2492m), we cross the mythical Col d'Izoard, from where we have one last grandiose view of the southern Alps. The descent through a superb larch forest takes us to the hamlet of Le Laus (1750m).

Walking time: 5h30 - Difference in altitude: + 915m / - 1045 m
