Sundial of the Church of Saint Pancras

This sundial, dating from 1821, is located on the south facade of the Church of Saint Pancras.
Painted on plaster like a fresco, it features acanthus leaf motifs.

Description

Dated 1821 thanks to the inscription MVIIICXXI, it also bears the mottos: “Vulnerant omnes ultima necat” (“All wound, the last kills”)
and “Hic umbra Forte tua” (“Here lies a shadow. Perhaps yours.”)

Restored by the Club du Vieux Manoir, it is a sundial known as a “declining afternoon” sundial. These lines are numbered at the end, and its style is known as polar lanceolate:
this means that it points towards the North Star and is parallel to the Earth's axis of rotation.
In this case, the time is marked by the entire shadow of the style. This style is placed in the north-south plane. The angle of the style with the horizontal plane is equal to the geographical latitude of the sundial's location.

It is said to be lanceolate because of the spear shape at the end of the style.
