Cabane Mine

The Cabane Mine is the only mine open to visitors (as part of a guided tour). With a lamp in hand and a hard hat on your head, you’ll enter the tunnel to see the working conditions of the peasant miners.

Description

The landscapes and the village of Villard-Saint-Pancrace bear the marks of these farmer-miners’ past. Many remnants of this mining activity can still be seen while walking along the hiking trails in the Bois du Villard. In Villard-Saint-Pancrace, numerous small-scale coal mines—operated and organized in a manner unique to our region—were in operation until the 1960s. The one known as “La Cabane” is the only one open to visitors.
