Taure educational trail in the Bois des Ayes biological reserve
This educational trail winds through the Bois des Ayes Biological Reserve! Enjoy a fun exploration of the forest’s secrets, with views of the surrounding peaks and Lake Orceyrette. Along the way, you’ll find educational signs and exhibits about the environment.
Description
From Plan Peyron, at the foot of the biological reserve, you’ll find the starting point of the Taure nature trail. This trail climbs 380 meters through the forest. You’ll pass from a dense stand of larch trees to a centuries-old Swiss stone pine forest.
You can either stop in a clearing to admire the scenery or continue southward to reach a flat trail with a magnificent view of Lake Orceyrette.
To head back down, continue toward Lake Orceyrette along a trail that descends to your right down to the lake; then follow the lake’s shore—either to the right or to the left—to return to Plan Peyron (8.5 kilometers and 380 meters of elevation gain).
You can also retrace your steps by taking the same route as on the way up; this way, you won’t pass by the lake but will arrive back at your starting point (7 km and 380 meters of elevation gain).
You can also start from the mountain center and walk to Plan Peyron; which will add about 500 meters of elevation gain and take approximately 4 hours round-trip (note: during peak season, frequent car traffic kicks up a cloud of dust; hiking up and down via Le Mélézin will be more pleasant).
Did you know that Swiss stone pines are abundant in the Bois des Ayes Biological Reserve? This reserve was established in the 1980s to preserve this remarkable natural heritage. Some of these pines are over 600 years old!
This forest is home to many species that find refuge in these pines, including the Eurasian pygmy owl and the Tengmalm’s owl. It is also an important habitat for the black grouse.
