Winter and summer alike, hiking is not without risk. Off groomed and marked trails, you're on your own responsibility.

Whether you're on foot, snowshoeing or ski touring, it's important to be cautious, prepare your outing carefully and follow these few rules.

Consult the weather forecast. Note that in winter the days are shorter.

Watch the avalanche bulletin

Dress warmly and take extra warm clothing no matter how long the hike. Weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains

→ Provide sufficient food and water

Choose an itinerary suited to your physical condition, your abilities and your knowledge of the mountains

→ Take note of topographical guide recommendations

→ Do not set off alone , and inform your family and friends of the route you have chosen and the time you plan to return.

→ Turn back if the route becomes complicated or in case of doubt or concern

→ Bring safety equipment, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe

Think of mountain professionals to guide you on outings off the beaten track.

shhh DO NOT DISTURB

When out and about in winter, remember to respect the peace and quiet of the wild chamois, roe deer, ptarmigan and black grouse, which are fragile when the snow is deep and food scarce.

Opposite you will find advice from the Ecrins National Park on how to observe without disturbing.

The black grouse is one of the most emblematic species of the Alps, and one that must be protected. Areas have been set aside to limit winter disturbance, so please avoid passing through these quiet zones.
