Notre Dame des Grâces Chapel

Located in Plampinet just before Névache in the Clarée Valley, this chapel was built in the XV century in Romanesque style. It presents inside a beautiful set of mural paintings illustrating the deadly sins and the corresponding virtues.

Description

This chapel is the first place of worship in Plampinet. Since mass was not said often enough, the archbishopric of Embrun then encouraged the construction of the church of Saint-Sébastien de Plampinet.

The wall paintings are representative of the decorations of the religious buildings of the 15th and 16th centuries in the region, less expensive than stained glass or sculptures and more imposing.

The oldest panels date from 1450. The Bible then in Latin, these frescoes similar to a comic strip, allowed to spread the biblical message to everyone.

Very present thanks to the cultural exchanges with Lombard Italy, they are often made "a fresco": directly on a fresh plaster, hence the name "frescoes".

Opening hours

The chapel is only open to the public on guided tours organized mainly during school vacations, or by reservation.
During the summer vacations: twice a week with guided tours provided by the Briançon Heritage Service (free, offered by the commune of Névache) or Elsa Giraud, guide-conférencier (paying) and every weekend with the association for the protection of the hamlet of Plampinet (paying - in aid of the association). It remains closed to the public for the rest of the year.
