La Découverte - Bed and breakfast
Fresh from the mountains of California, Kristina and Benoît welcome you to La Découverte. Whether you're looking for half-board, a stopover, or a longer stay, this is the place to go for a real vacation!
Description
Once the grand hotel of Névache, La Découverte is now a gîte-auberge in the Clarée valley. Sarah and Grégoire welcome you from June to the end of October, and again from the end of December to the end of March, in the heart of a small, unspoilt hamlet surrounded by unspoilt nature. Reservations only by e-mail or telephone.
Situated at an altitude of 1600 m, the small village of Névache is the starting point for cross-country skiing, hiking, trail running and ski touring. Here you'll find everything the mountains have to offer: peace and quiet, relaxation and sport, all in the heart of nature.
In our mountains you'll find exceptional alpine lakes, panoramic views of the Ecrins and Vanoise massifs, alpine chalets and small chapels typical of another era.
With torrents, marmots, birds and chamois enjoying this protected area, you're in for a treat. From wildflowers in spring, to larch trees in changing colors, to snow as far as the eye can see in winter, nature will surprise you in every season.
Sarah concocts 100% homemade dishes that are hearty, tasty and balanced, using fresh, seasonal and local produce. Grégoire will take care of you from the moment you make your reservation, guiding you through stays tailored to your needs and desires.

Host portrait : Formerly the Grand Hôtel de Névache, La Découverte is now a guesthouse-refuge in the Clarée Valley. In the heart of a small, preserved hamlet surrounded by magnificent nature, Kristina and Benoît have been welcoming guests since September 2019. Created by the Pinoncély family, then taken over and developed by Claudine and Olivier Chrétien for over 20 years, we are happy to continue the story of La Découverte and offer you warm accommodations and generous, creative cuisine.
Situated at 1,600 m altitude, the small village of Névache is the starting point for cross-country ski trails, hiking paths, trail running, and ski touring. Here you will find everything the mountains have to offer: peace, relaxation, sport, all immersed in nature.
In our mountains, you will discover exceptional alpine lakes, panoramic views of the Écrins and Vanoise massifs, mountain chalets, and small chapels typical of a bygone era.
With streams, marmots, birds, and chamois enjoying this protected area, you are sure to have a wonderful experience. From wildflowers in spring, larches with changing colors, to endless snow in winter, nature will surprise you in every season.
Benoît
When you are in the mountains, you gain perspective and return to what matters most. Since the age of three, I have explored the Alpine peaks, sometimes even further, with a particular love for the Écrins and Mont Blanc massifs. After scientific studies, I began my professional career at Patagonia, where I was inspired by Yvon Chouinard’s environmental philosophy, then joined Lowe Alpine in Annecy.
I later moved to California to create a plastic-free organic dairy (yogurts sold in returnable ceramic pots). Yet the mountains called me back, leading me into tourism: first a Bed & Breakfast in the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe, and now a return to my roots with La Découverte in Névache.
Kristina
Sharing, exchanging, and discovering are what link my varied experiences! Passionate about human culture, learning, and the lifestyle of yesteryear, as a child I lived in the American West, immersing myself in the past through Little House on the Prairie and Heidi. My family spent weeks on itinerant hikes, sometimes cross-country skiing and often camping, as well as week-long river descents in Oregon.
Years later, during a camping and climbing weekend at Yosemite, I met Benoît and the mountains truly captured my heart. In the Alps, I could finally connect historical heritage with rugged landscapes. I completed my master’s at the University of Savoie on rural Alpine life in the late 19th century. I also have a passion for cooking, with precious memories of learning to make jams and preserves with my grandmother. I later taught all ages and ran a small bakery in California. I helped Benoît with our organic dairy, managing markets and recipe development. I love making everything from scratch, with a special passion for cooking and sharing knowledge.
We will be delighted to welcome you to our little paradise and recommend hikes, a cultural day in Briançon, or a relaxing day in the warm waters of the Grands Bains de Monêtier. Come and recharge in the heart of nature! -
